Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

Saturday, June 26th, 2010
by Philip Vincent

The overall safety of chiropractic care is unquestionably one of the most frequently asked questions of patients suffering from back and neck pain. Before a potential patient decides to try out this kind of therapy, they’d really like to assure themselves that the treatment is safe and has no side effects. So, is chiropractic safe? The short answer to that question is ‘yes’.

When you’ve been suffering from low back or neck pain, your first thought may be to dull the pain through pain killers in order to bring your condition to a manageable level. You may even have considered surgery to alleviate the pain. However, chiropractic is a safe, non-surgical treatment that concentrates on re-aligning your spine to dissipate your pain. This is done through several sessions with a doctor who specializes in massaging your spine to correct the alignment and alleviate your pain.

You won’t be prescribed a dose of medications or undergo extensive surgery needing careful post operative care. In fact, there is absolutely no invasive surgery involving your spine or back region. The spinal chord is a delicate region in your body which must be attended to with precise care and skill. A doctor of chiropractic works externally on your vertebrae to bring your discs in proper alignment and reduce the pressure on your central nervous system typically caused by slipped or misaligned discs.

Chiropractic care also involves the manual management of your muscles, joints and tendons to heal injuries to the muscles and bring relief from incessant pain. This treatment must be done by a qualified practitioner with verifiable credentials and training. As your spine is very sensitive to mistreatment, only an experienced practitioner should manipulate your vertebrae.

If you’re elderly and suffering from osteoporosis, you may want to speak to your physician before considering this option. (At a minimum, alert the chiropractor as to your condition.) Similarly, very young patients may also require prior consultation with a physician who may be able to advise whether chiropractic therapy would be conducive for their particular problem. You should always reveal your personal medical history to your chiropractic doctor to enable your doctor to perform a thorough diagnosis of your condition and devise a suitable course of treatment.

You may experience some mild discomfort when you’re undergoing treatment for the first time. This is common as your body adjusts to the alignment of your vertebrae, just like when you exercise for the first time in awhile. You may undergo posture stabilization as part of your therapy in which case you’ll feel slightly uncomfortable at first as you start to stabilize your posture. None of these initial side effects will last and you will not suffer any permanent damage to your body when you are treated by a skilled and experienced chiropractic practitioner.

By using natural methods of treatment, chiropractic has gained a good reputation for being a safe alternative treatment to conventional medicine and surgery. The proponents of this type of therapy advocate its efficacy by stressing that all treatment methods are externally conducted. Only spine, joints and muscles are manipulated to achieve the desired results.

When you choose chiropractic as your preferred solution to alleviate pain in your back and neck, you’re opting for a safe, alternative therapy that doesn’t involve surgery. Through the gentle manipulation of your spine, you’ll quickly experience relief from your pain and begin to enjoy a pain free life again.

Prescription Medication And Grapefruit May Be A Deadly Combination

Friday, June 25th, 2010
by Dr. Michael Pritsker, DC

I just read a true story that shocked me. I bet it will shock you, too. If you are taking certain medications and eat grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice you may be a ticking time bomb. Here is why. In this story, a retiree spends his summers up north and winters in the south. This is what natives call a snowbird. Two months after arriving in sunny Florida, this retiree was dead. Doctors believe the cause was a deadly interaction between the 2-3 glasses of fresh grapefruit juice he drank everyday and his medication. Drinking grapefruit juice can be deadly for people who take certain medications, according to a recent paper. In this particular case, the fatal interaction is believed to be between the grapefruit and Lipitor.

This victim had high cholesterol and other risk factors for heart disease. Because if this, doctors put him on Lipitor and he began a diet and exercise program to get better. Two weeks after going to Florida for the winter, he went to the hospital complaining of muscle pains, fatigue and fever. That’s where he went into kidney failure and passed away. Although experts know the problem exists, most people and doctors are still in the dark about the deadly risks, even though the FDA requires all prospective new drugs to be tested for interactions with grapefruit juice. A warning about grapefruit juice is included in the “food-drug interactions” that come with dozens of medications.

Since grapefruit juice is metabolized by the same enzyme in the liver that breaks down many drugs, it is one of the foods most likely to cause problems with drugs. When the system is overloaded, scientists said the grapefruit juice can “swamp” the system, keeping the liver from doing its complete job and blocking it from breaking down drugs and other substances.

Scientists say that the most severe effects are likely with some statins. While the liver devotes its resources to the grapefruit juice, the medication can build up to dangerous levels. This causes a breakdown of the body’s muscles and even kidney failure. This eventually can lead to death.

So for the first tip if you are taking any prescription medication especially when it comes to statin drugs are sure to ask your doctor about the possible interactions with grapefruit juice. You should also read the warning labels that come with your medication. I know there may be a lot of fine print in these labels, but it could be the difference between life and death.

Why do you think there is so much fine print in the first place? This is because all drugs have toxic side effects. That is not to say they don’t save lives and are not needed in certain situations. Clearly they do and are. But, the goal of real health should be to have your body function properly without drugs, or at least with as little drugs as humanly possible. How? Through proper diet, exercise, stress management and chiropractic care. I recently read a quote from a famous NFL coach, Jimmy Johnson. He said something like this: There are more things that can go bad with a passing play, than a running play. That’s why, when in doubt, if at all possible, run the ball. I have the same philosophy with health. If at all possible, do it naturally.

The Tingling And Pain Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome May Have Nothing To Do With Your Wrist!

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010
by Dr. Michael Pritsker, DC

Carpal tunnel syndrome may be one of the most misunderstood, misdiagnosed and mistreated conditions in modern medicine. It’s a crying shame because countless carpal tunnel victims could end their pain and suffering almost overnight if they only knew what local San Diego chiropractors and carpal tunnel syndrome specialists revealed to the public. If you’re suffering with carpal tunnel syndrome, what you’re about to discover can literally give you your life back. If you know anyone battling carpal tunnel syndrome, have them read this article. You may be responsible for changing their life.

Here are the astonishing facts in regard to carpal tunnel syndrome. Only 25% of all Carpal Tunnel Syndrome patients were able to return to their previous professions following surgery. Up to 36% of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome patients require unlimited medical treatment. Surgery for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the second most common type of surgery, with well over 230,000 procedures performed annually. The U.S. Department of Labor has concluded that carpal tunnel syndrome is the “chief occupational hazard of the 90’s - disabling workers in epidemic proportions.” Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects over 8 million Americans. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the #1 reported medical problem, accounting for about 50% of all work related injuries.

I don’t know about you, but reading those statistics tells me something is radically wrong with the “accepted” methods of treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out surgery is not the way to go when 230,000 are being performed each year and only 25% are able to return to their previous jobs. And returning to work does not mean pain-free. I wonder how many of that 25% were actually pain-free.

Take into consideration also the inherent risks of surgery and your option of getting cut starts looking like a distant last resort. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has traditionally been defined as an entrapment of the median nerve inside the carpal tunnel in your wrist. The base of the carpal tunnel is made of eight carpal bones also known as wrist bones. They are odd shaped and fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. The ligaments are like fishing line. They help hold the bones together.

The roof of the tunnel contains a ligament. It is called the transverse carpal ligament. It stretches from one side of the carpal tunnel to the other side. A space is formed between the carpal bones. The transverse carpal ligament is the size of your pinky. A bunch of nerves, tendons and more pass through that small space. These include nine flexor tendons blood vessels and one nerve. There is also the median nerve, which is the primary nerve to your hand. The well known definition of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is compression of the median nerve. This occurs as it passes through the tunnel.

Nerves are like tiny wires that transmit electrical impulses from your brain and spinal cord to the rest of your body. Every time you want to move your hand, your brain sends electrical impulses down the median nerve to the muscles in your hand, causing them to contract. Nerves are very sensitive and can easily get “pinched” or “compressed.” If the median nerve gets pinched or compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel, it causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It is commonly thought that an injury or repetitive stress to the wrist can cause such an injury.

Here’s the difficulty with all that. There is another situation that causes the precise same symptoms as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome that has slight or not anything to do with the wrist! This situation is called Double Crush Syndrome and here’s how it works. There are a lot of sites that can squeeze a nerve as it goes from your brain and spinal cord to your wrist. Simply put, Double Crush Syndrome occurs when you have many compression sites. More importantly, a compression site nearer to the spinal cord and brain makes it much easier for a nerve to be compressed somewhere else. Other areas consist of the wrist. You most likely would not have Carpal Tunnel Symptoms if you only had compression only in your wrist. It is usually the grouping of the compression sites that cause the problem.

So in most cases, if you remove the entrapment or compression that is closer to the spine, many, if not all, of your symptoms will go away without ever touching the wrist! The most common sites of compression or entrapment are a muscle in your forearm called the pronator teres, the thoracic outlet by your shoulder, and your neck. The most frequent place seems to be as the nerve exits your spine in your neck.

By restoring function of your neck via chiropractic care, compression on the nerve can be relieved. This will eliminate the Double Crush Syndrome and fix the true cause of your Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This is why specialized chiropractic care can work wonders for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome when all else has failed.

The significant thing to remember is you must be evaluated by a doctor that understands Double Crush Syndrome and evaluate you for all the possible compression sites and fix them properly. A total Chiropractic evaluation can also detect if your carpal tunnel symptoms are coming from one of the other compression/entrapment sites like your forearm, shoulder or wrist and work on those areas as well. A hand specialist may completely overlook the actual cause of your problem which may be the Double Crush Syndrome.

To find out more on how to eliminate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome forever, pain victims can search for Dr. Michael Pritsker, D.C. in San Diego. He has treated thousands of carpal tunnel pain victims with advanced spinal decompression, chiropractic care, and wristrac therapy. He can be reached at New Century Spine Centers at 619-630-9153.

For persons suffering from constant back pain, sciatica, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, herniated discs, and bulging discs, advanced spinal decompression treatment may be their greatest back pain answer.

Up until now, there were only three options that existed to deal with the pain from low back conditions. They were swallowing pain pills for pain management, going under the knife with spine surgery, or just learning to live with the pain. New Century Spine Centers in San Diego has acquired not only the top spinal decompression doctors in San Diego, but also has brought in some of the most advanced spine decompression therapies available for non-surgical treatment of back pain. According to top spinal decompression specialist Dr. Michael Pritsker, DC, back and leg pain can be debilitating and it affects thousands of people each year. Whether it’s patients that requested our free report from www.SanDiegoBackPainTreatment.com or if they were referred by their friends, family, or chiropractic doctor, they can rest assure that they are in the right hands at New Century Spine Centers.

Advanced spinal decompression therapy has been around for over 10 years, but some doctors unfortunately still are unaware of its benefits. There are different spinal decompression therapy programs such as DRX 9000 spinal decompression, Triton spinal decompression, ABS, Lordex, and more. Regardless of which system is used, it’s most important to choose the right spine specialist. It doesn’t matter what the name of the spinal decompression table is. Your body doesn’t know the difference between different brands. Physiologically speaking, all spinal decompression tables have the exact same effect on the discs and surrounding tissues, yet some doctors want you to believe that their equipment is far superior to all other brands. There are many different brands of decompression tables out there. Some are nicer and larger than others. Some have more frills, but the fact is the brand of the table has no bearing on the results as long as it is a spinal decompression table. Here is something to consider. If they all make the same claim of being the best, then can it really be true? Most racing cars are built very similar. But the winning race car has the best driver. To get rid of back pain, then you need to go to the best spinal decompression doctor. Picking the proper spinal decompression specialist is the most important decision to fixing excruciating back pain.

Finally, there is a proven solution to get rid of back pain. The procedure provides relief of pain and symptoms associated with spinal stenosis, herniated discs, bulging discs, protruding spinal discs, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, sciatica, and chronic back pain. Hundreds of people restored full functional health to their back using this procedure in the Mission Valley area of San Diego. Some of the benefits are that the treatment is non-surgical and no drugs are involved, it is non-invasive, and it is a painless process. Patients describe the treatment procedure as painless and relaxing.

Back pain victims who should consider treatment are those who are tired of living with back pain and leg pain. Taking advantage of this scientifically proven approach to relieving and eliminating back and leg pain may be the best choice a back pain sufferer may make. Many insurance plans also cover this very affordable procedure and thousands of Americans are opting for this painless procedure. It’s a treatment that should be looked into before spinal surgery.

It just makes common sense to try a non-invasive procedure before one does resort to surgery. It is so popular that a toll-free, 24 hour recorded message is now available to learn more and receive free information that explains the details. New Century Spine Centers has set up this toll free 24 hour recorded message line where injured people can call to request a free video and report. The phone number is 1-888-611-2042. Back pain victims can also visit the New Century Spine Centers website at http://www.BackCareTreatment.com to get more information and watch videos of the advanced spinal decompression therapy program in action.

Low Back Pain Relief Is Closer Than You Think In Newburgh

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010
by Darcy Selvidge

Low back pain can come from several sources. If you think that the only way to suffer back problems is through physical injury, think again. Obviously, physical injury and stress CAN cause lower back pain, but the buck doesn’t stop there. Psychological stress can cause back pain, emotional troubles can lead to back pain, health issues that seem completely unrelated to the back can cause back pain. And, back troubles can affect more than just the back, which is why you should keep a Newburgh chiropractor somewhere in your address book, because it can happen to any of us. Here are some of the lesser known symptoms and causes of back troubles.

Emotional and Psychological Stress

How can mental stress affect the lower back? Well, think about it. After a particularly rough day, you’re physically tense, every muscle is wound tighter than a factory seal. This is, obviously, not good for your physical well being. This can make your whole body less limber, it can ruin your posture and it can lead to back pains and aches.

Emotional Pain

This may sound a little, well, far fetched, but think about it for a moment. The brain stem provides a sort of gray area where doctors don’t really know where the spine ends and the brain begins, so it stands to reason that it can be difficult to figure out where the problem begins, and it’s obvious that problems with one can lead to problems with the other.

Leg Injuries

Your legs are the shock absorbers for your spine, and if they have a problem, your spine will, too. Imagine driving a car with no tires or shocks. Sooner or later, the engine itself is going to start having some problems.

Head Aches

Headaches can come from lower back problems because a kink in the spine can put undue pressure on the base of the skull. Ever wake up having slept in the wrong position to find both a kink in your neck and a headache? This is something a Newburgh chiropractor can help you with.

One of the services he provides is to show you ways to prevent future injuries. This is a completely natural complimentary modality that specializes in bone setting.

To prevent injuries to the muscles that support the spine and joints, your chiropractor may offer you various strength training tips and strategies. This may be the case if you have injured the muscles in a specific area. To prevent a recurring injury, the only answer is to ensure that you do specific exercises to stretch and strengthen your muscles.

The skeleton supports the muscles, but the muscles support the skeleton, they are dependant on each other to function normally. Poor posture, or incorrect movement can lead to injury during athletic exercise and a chiropractor can shows you way to correct your posture to prevent this from happening.

Many athletes do not realize that an injury can take up to six weeks to heal properly. Medication can be used to dull pain, but more often than not you cause further injury by over exerting yourself because you the warning signals, the pain, has been blocked. The injury heals at the same rate, regardless of pain killers or other medications.

The chiropractor can assess the nature of the injury and by realigning the joint correctly, ensures that the muscles are in their correct position. If the joint is misaligned, this can cause strain and tension in your muscles and can place strain upon the nerves.

Proper chiropractic care can put you on the right path and can speed the healing process. Follow the advice provided with regards to treating your injury and allow for a minimum of six weeks recovery time before you start athletic training again. The body takes time to heal and forcing yourself to do strenuous exercise too soon can worsen the original injury.

How Do Santa Monica, CA Locals With Low Back Pain Find Relief?

Monday, June 21st, 2010
by Darryl Kendricks

Pain in the lower back cannot be properly fixed without learning the mechanics of the spine. There are many factors that can contribute to these aches, including injury and weight gain. Good spinal health also improves the condition of many body parts. A Santa Monica chiropractor may have the answers you seek.

Chiropractors are educated in the specific parts of the spine and how they contribute to the health of other body parts. The nervous system travels down the spinal column and sends information between the body and the brain. When the parts of a spine are out of place, there is potential of interference with nerves. Those parts include bones, muscles, and ligaments, and any of these may be the source of pain.

Problems with the spine effect more than just the back. Pain in the lower back is only one out of many issues that can be handled by a chiropractor. Aches in the knees and legs may be addressed, along with inflammation in the joints.

Correct spinal alignment is also an effective preventative measure. The nerves that control the various functions of your entire body all travel through the spinal column to the brain. When bones are out of place they affect the nervous system. A properly aligned spine allows the nerves to operate without interference and the entire body works as it should.

While other methods of care might mask the symptoms, this is a system that focuses on discovering the source of your problem and addressing it. The process is completely natural and does not require the use of drugs or chemicals. All that is needed, is knowledge in the natural workings of the body.

Though it is not guaranteed, there can occasionally be advantages beyond the relief of pain. For a person with chronic pain, or someone who just wants better overall health, consider a Santa Monica chiropractor.
