Mental Images Psychology Information
The brain is a fascinating thing, it is not just a large mass that happens to control our mental actions and reactions, it is also in charge of our entire nervous system, which has control over every body part and its movement. It is because of its vast intricacies that the brain is probably the most widely studied part of the body, theories and investigations have been made, not the least of which is our ability to create mental images without even wanting to.
A mental image is often defined as a thought that the brain is engaged in that quite possibly is completely unrelated to the situation it is in. This mental imaging is more likely than not to show up in any classroom, as the student tunes out the teacher’s voice and brings his/her self to another place - forming what is known as a daydream.
Another example of this is imagination, which might happen on purpose, or even spontaneously. Small girls sometimes fantasize that they are princesses, and will imagine everything necessary to actually be a princess in their mind. Another type of mental image is ‘visualization’, in which the subject will create a visible image in their own ‘mind’s eye’. This is practiced until this image attains a tangible reality to the person visualizing it. When these techniques are used with other relaxation methods, one can reach a more thorough and deeper relaxation state than with either technique alone.
Medically, these methods are often effectively used to relieve many anxiety and stress disorders for many patient who suffer from tension. There have been many positive results from multiple approaches, like The Ultimate Massage Chair Black (HW566BLK) for example, all of which are beneficial in reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
Techniques such as biofeedback, meditation, yoga, and forms of body and mind control have worked very well with different individuals. In investigating the various techniques one will find that they actually work on the premise of self-hypnosis, which is often called mental imaging. For example, by converting one’s mind to a blank canvas and concentrating on a single object, phrase, prayer, or whatever it is possible to mentally remove one from a current situation and reach a degree of peace and relaxation not achieved otherwise. It is a method of self-hypnosis in which one is able to remove the cares of the day and relax to the state of being near euphoria.
Mental images can occur on a regular basis, sometimes daily, however one becomes so used to it that they no longer give it a second thought. Getting a participant to think of thoughts that bring to their mind an event, occasion or person that will take their mind from the present to the past or even the future. When reading a book some people experience the book as well, they are so drawn into what the author has said that they can picture it in their mind.
Learning a technique that will benefit the body without the use of prescription drugs is an ideal situation. Some people, in trying these techniques, do not allow enough time to reach the goal they are seeking. It should be understood that it is only by repetition that success can be found. Some of these programs take only a few minutes two or three times a day, while others may take half an hour or more. The technique of utilizing a mental image works very well especially when used in conjunction with some form of meditation.
Doctors, therapists and psychiatrists all make the argument that the brain controls many, if not all, of the problems that occur with the body, and that the stresses and anxieties that are related to these things can be helped with mental imaging. Because your nerves extend through your entire body, the things that happen to your brain can be easily related to what happens to your body as well. Unfriendly interactions with people or bad days at work can cause very bad headaches and fatigue. Once these connections were discovered and studied, strategies for relieving aches, pains and stress were studied and established. Those who are interested in trying these techniques to heal themselves are aided by experts who have studied extensively in this field, a well as sessions with larger groups.
